Can adults have ADHD, and how do you find out? Yes. ADHD often continues into adulthood or goes unrecognized until then, and a short screening questionnaire is a common first step. This free self-check uses six questions from a screening tool clinicians use, takes about two minutes, and keeps your answers private.
It is educational and not a diagnosis, but it can help you decide whether talking with a psychiatric provider is a sensible next step. Twelve Oaks Psychiatry offers evaluations in person in Cooper City and by telehealth across all of Florida, with same-day appointments often available.

Your answers stay completely private, and nothing you enter is saved or shared. This is an educational self-check, not a diagnosis.
Save or screenshot your results. Sharing them at your first visit gives Michael a clearer starting point.
What this self-test measures
The six questions come from the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS-v1.1), developed by the World Health Organization together with researchers at Harvard Medical School. It is one of the most widely used first-look screeners for adult ADHD in primary care and psychiatry.
Each question is scored against a set range, and four or more answers in that range suggests your symptoms are consistent with adult ADHD and that a full evaluation is worth considering. A lower result does not rule ADHD out, and a higher result does not confirm it. Only a clinical evaluation can do either, because the same patterns can come from anxiety, depression, sleep problems, or ongoing stress.
What ADHD can look like in adults
Adult ADHD often looks different from the restless-child stereotype. In adults it tends to show up as a steady pattern that affects work, home, and relationships, rather than as obvious hyperactivity. Common signs include:
- Starting projects but struggling to finish the final details
- Difficulty organizing tasks, time, or belongings
- Losing track of appointments, deadlines, or everyday items
- Putting off tasks that take sustained mental effort
- Restlessness, fidgeting, or feeling driven to keep moving
- Focus lapses that affect performance or relationships
Many adults have lived with these patterns since childhood without ever being evaluated. Noticing them is not the same as having ADHD, but it is a good reason to take a closer look.
How an ADHD evaluation works in Florida
If your result points toward ADHD, the next step is an ADHD evaluation with Michael Hernandez, APRN, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner. He reviews your history and current symptoms, looks at how they affect daily life, and considers whether something else could be behind them. When treatment is appropriate, that can include medication management and coordination with therapy.
Visits are available in person in Cooper City and by telehealth anywhere in Florida, so you can be seen from home. Same-day appointments are often available. Twelve Oaks Psychiatry accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, AvMed, and 200+ additional plans. Frequently asked questions
Can adults have ADHD?
Yes. ADHD is not only a childhood condition. Many people are evaluated for the first time as adults, often after years of trouble with focus, organization, or follow-through. Symptoms usually trace back to childhood but are recognized later in life.
Is an online ADHD self-test accurate?
A self-test is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. The ASRS is validated as a first-look screener, which means it is good at flagging when a fuller evaluation is worth doing. It cannot confirm or rule out ADHD on its own, and only a clinical evaluation can.
What does my score mean?
Four or more answers in the scored range suggests your symptoms are consistent with adult ADHD and that an evaluation makes sense. Fewer than four means fewer of those patterns showed up today, which still does not rule ADHD out if the symptoms are affecting your life.
Can a psychiatric nurse practitioner diagnose ADHD?
Yes. Michael Hernandez, APRN, PMHNP-BC, is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner who evaluates and diagnoses adult ADHD and manages treatment, including medication management when it is appropriate.
Can I get an ADHD evaluation through telehealth in Florida?
Yes. Twelve Oaks Psychiatry offers telehealth evaluations across Florida, so you can be seen from home. You need to be physically located in Florida during your visit. In-person visits in Cooper City are also available.
Does insurance cover an ADHD evaluation?
Twelve Oaks Psychiatry accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, AvMed, and 200+ additional plans. Coverage for evaluation and treatment varies by plan, so please confirm your benefits with your insurer.
How long does the self-test take?
About two minutes. It is six questions, and your answers stay on your device.
What should I do in a mental health crisis?
If you feel you might harm yourself or someone else, or you are in immediate danger, call 9-1-1 right away. For crisis support, call or text 988. In many Florida communities, 2-1-1 connects you to crisis information and local referrals.
